In which year did you initially open Flora Hall Brewing?
Flora Hall opened in 2017, after a full year restoration and repurposing of the beautiful but derelict building at 37 Flora Street in Ottawa's vibrant Centretown neighbourhood.
The award-winning heritage structure houses a 15-barrel craft brewhouse, two full bars, and a scratch kitchen to serve the 120 seats spread over two levels inside. The brewers have been decorated with countless awards including many golds at Canada Beer Cup, Canadian Brewing Awards, Ontario Brewing Awards, and a notable silver medal at the World Beer Cup in 2023.
How many types of beer do you usually brew?
We have 12 taps always full of delicious and fresh Flora beers, including both core beers (English Ordinary Bitter, Oatmeal Stout, Hazy Oat Pale Ale, North East IPA, West Coast IPA and Bohemian Style Pilsner, amongst others) and an ever-changing set of seasonals.
Do you have seasonal beers that you brew?
Since opening in 2017 our brew team, under leadership of Head Brewer and Operating Partner Rod Hughes, has brewed well over 100 unique beer recipes! Popular seasonals include Imperial Chocolate Stout, Norwegian Kveik Pale Ale, Mango Lassi IPA, Strawberry Rhubarb Gose, and many more!
How has TAAG allowed you to focus more on your business?
We have been working with TAAG since our inception (originally Elite Accounting) and they have been nothing short of superb. Providing services across the spectrum (bookkeeping, excise and tax accounting, and business support) they ensure that our business is always up to date and fully compliant and allows us to focus on what we do best - delighting our customers with great food and drink and experiences in our beautiful establishment!
What are your company’s core values and what does it mean to you and your business?
Flora Hall was established as a neighbourhood gathering space designed to provide a welcoming, inclusive community space for one and all. We are active supporters of many community causes as one of our key operating principles is to be a responsible and generous citizen of our Centretown community and the city of Ottawa at large. Flora Hall is a sustainable, environmentally sensitive operation whose clear mission is to provide the freshest, most innovative and interesting food and drink available in Ottawa. With heavy emphasis on top quality customer service in a warm, inviting and unique space, we are built to last and are wonderfully housed in a century-old heritage space. It is our clear vision and intention to be operating as a neighbourhood brewery, kitchen, and gathering space at the turn of the next century, and beyond!
